Urban Backyard Gardening

About two weeks ago, swampkitty (from ColumbusFoodie.com) posted some photos from her backyard garden over here on Columbus Underground. I’ve been growing some bell peppers and tomatoes this year (now that we have some room to do it) and her photos inspired me to take some of my own. These are from Saturday. Some of the bell peppers might be ready to pick this week.

  1. Wow, your red peppers are turning red already? Mine are still woefully green (unless they ripped me off and sold me greens instead of reds) – ditto with my cayenne peppers. I got my first red tomato yesterday, which I’m planning on using in a Cobb Salad Muffaletta I’m making tonight. Your garden looks awesome! Who says that one can’t have a nice little garden in the middle of the city?

There were three peppers that decided to start coming in VERY early when my plants were tiny. They didn’t get very big before they started turning red. I actually just picked them off yesterday. I’ve got others on there that started coming in normally that are HUGE but haven’t started turning yet. So I think those three little red ones were flukes. ;)

Thanks for the compliments though! I think the garden will look better when we get that ugly fence (in the background) replaced next summer. It’s not be kept up in forever and we decided to suffer through with it this year before ripping it down.

Looks good. I should put up pics of my garden as well. It is pretty small, but I made a raised garden using retainer wall. I had peas, tomatoes, peppers, and some herbs.

The peas were producing like crazy until that bad storm when the tornado warnings were going off. The wind blew them all over and snapped the vines so they all died.

So now I have some very overgrown tomato plants that have produced about 30 nice red tomatoes so far.
