This was a topic that came up on Columbus Underground last August and I’ve thought about it off and on since then. One of the reasons I felt like bringing it back up is because a lot of cities hold their Restaurant Week events during this time of year.
“Restaurant Week” was coined in New York City in 1992 and has spread to most other major US cities as a way to feature some of the more expensive dining establishments to the bargain-hunting public. These week-long lunch-and-dinner events provide a lot of publicity for participating establishments, and drawn in a lot of new customers who otherwise may not normally patronize the featured businesses.
While Columbus already has plenty of food-related events, I can only see an official “Restaurant Week” being another draw to our city for visitors both within the state and around the country.
If CORA, ExperienceColumbus, and DineOriginals Columbus all sat down and made this happen, we could have a really stellar national event on our hands.
Yes i think that would be great. We have really great independent restaurant owners as well as some decent corporate owned. A platform to recognize some of the highly touted but under the radar chefs and up-and-coming ones. Would it be a week long event or weekend?
Yes, Columbus should have a restaurant week. For the same reason grocery stores offer free samples. It’s just a good way to get people familiar with a product they might not normally try. And I love some bargains, too!
Yes.
