A new “going green” initiative has been launched by the City of Columbus, and the website for it can be found here. While the initiative doesn’t really offer any new concrete incentives, it does seem like it could be a great tool for marketing and educational outreach.
I went through the site’s proceedure to join the initiative. You’re given a few sets of choices on what sort of pledges you want to make in order to join. Some of them were things that we already do in our household (use incandescent light bulbs, buy local foods, drive less, etc) and others are things we’ve talked about doing (installing a rain barrel, planting some new trees, etc).
I’m hoping this isn’t a program that’s completely forgotten about in a year and something more grows out of it. I’d love it if Columbus could come up with a curbside solution sometime in the next year or two. I wouldn’t care at all if recycling pickup was built into property taxes. Nobody has a problem paying for trash pickup that way. And how about some new incentives for alternative energy enhancements for individual homes and small businesses? I’ve been reading up on solar panel technology lately, and while I’d love to set it up, it’s quite expensive as is. If Columbus wants to truly become a “green city”, we’re all going to have to break the bank a bit sooner or later.
