My home is now an official Columbus Greenspot location

A few days ago I wrote about the new Greenspot initiative. I signed up to be a residential member and just got my email confirmation this morning. Posted below:

Welcome to the (green) club.

You are now officially a GreenSpot-joining the ranks of households, businesses, and community groups across Columbus who have gone green. Below is a complete list of the commitments you made in your GreenSpot application. Post it, email it, and pass it around as a reminder of your pledge to making your business group part of a healthier, cleaner, more sustainable Columbus.

My GreenSpot Pledge

Here’s how I will conserve energy

  • I will replace my regular incandescent light bulbs with high-efficiency compact fluorescent ones.
  • I will purchase foods, goods, and services that are grown or produced close to home.
  • I will turn my thermostat up in the summer, and down in the winter.

Here’s how I will conserve water

  • I will install a rain barrel in my yard to collect rainwater, and use it to water my plants.
  • I will run my dishwasher and washing machine only when they’re full.
  • I will plant a tree on my property.

Here’s how I will reduce, recycle and reuse

  • I will carry reusable bags when I shop.
  • I will choose products that use less packaging and less harmful material.
  • I will request to be taken off junk mailing lists, stop catalog orders, and pay my bills online.
  • I will avoid one-use items such as paper plates.
  • I will buy small amounts of items that have a short shelf life and bulk amounts of items that don’t go bad quickly.
  • I will donate unused or unwanted items instead of throwing them away-and explore thrift stores instead of always buying something new.
  • I will separate my yard waste (like grass clippings and leaves) from other trash, and leave it by the curb on my assigned day.

Spread the word. Make an even bigger impact by recruiting your Columbus friends, families, and coworkers to join.

I got my Greenspot designation email today too. I found it fairly easy to commit to, since it included things we’re already started doing or plan on doing soon anyway.

Sounds like we’ll be getting GreenSpot stickers in the mail soon too. ;)

We were out of town and had our mail held until today. Didn’t get our sticker yet. Perhaps tomorrow? Hrm.
