My Columbus Symphony Guilt

There’s been quite the buzz lately about how the CSO is going belly up. I’d like to say that I’m going to miss it if it goes away, but honestly… I never really went much.

In the past year, Anne & I attended Picnic with the Pops once last summer, which was a lot of fun, as we had good table seats and a great meal; and Video Games Live, which was enjoyable since I’m such a video game nerd, but the blinding lights and choice of venue (Mershon Auditorium) were turnoffs. Not really the most traditional way to enjoy the symphony… but we do listen to classical music on 89.7 on the radio quite a bit.

So anyway, what would become of the symphony in Columbus if CSO were to cease operations? I sort of like this scenario posted by Andrew Hall on CU:

Here is a plan : The musicians tell the CSO to take a long walk off a short bridge and go it on their own. Kill it before it dies from the rot. Take a real stand instead of relying on the public dole, more life-support bailouts and other plasters on a hemmorhage. Make the CCCP (Columbus Classical Collective Program). Run it your way. Own the production. If you do this, I will buy season tickets and I will host a CCCP benefit.
