Here’s some more info about what’s been worked on in the subcommittee I’m in. Any feedback on this is appreciated and WILL make it with me to the meetings.
Below is an excerpt from the minutes of the meeting on July 17:
The committee reported back on the following topics:
(1) Housing Committee
Gathered data with regard to downtown housing affordability and the incentives that were put in place to encourage the building of more units.
Found the average price of a unit is just under $300,000 and less than 20% of the units are less than $250,000.
Apartments have become competitive again with interest rates climbing and the cost of a condo being around $300,000
How can we incent builders to come up with more affordable condos or apartments?(2) Communications/Marketing Committee
There is a need to define who is YP and determine their needs and interests.
Revisit the data collected by Rebecca Ryan
What messages, strategies, and tools do other cities use to communicate with YPs.(3) Arts Committee
Paduka, Kentucky has been effective at redeveloping parts of its city in conjunction with an initiative to assist artists. Is it possible for us to replicate their program in Columbus? Possibly in Franklinton?
Does it make sense to create a Columbus Relocation Resource Center which assists those who would be interested in relocating to more easily access information and programs that would facilitate their relocation.(4) Recycling Committee
Met with Councilmember Ginther and O’Shaughnessy to discuss recycling in the Downtown Special Improvement District (“SID”).
The SID has sent out an RFP which when funded will enable businesses and residents downtown to recycle. This should be a cost neutral venture. The Commission has been asked to determine if the City can fund recycling receptacles for pedestrians downtown.
The goal will then be to take this model and replicate it in other parts of the city – Clintonville, Short North, Victorian Village, German Village, etc.(5) Job Creation
Will contact local human resource executives with regard to creating internship possibilities and better marketing jobs in Columbus and report back to the committee.

What happened to the YP peoples blog. It would be nice to see osme bios of the representation of YP people. Wasn’t there a whole blog and video campaign with this?
They shot some videos for the initial presentation, and some of the suggestions included setting up websites and blogs and whatnot, but it was supposed to be more of a resource for people looking for information on all things in Columbus rather than bios for the commission.
I know there’s some bios in print. I’ll check to see if it’s online anywhere, or if there’s a copy I can put online here.
