Highball Halloween 2009 & Blog Neglect

I’ve been neglecting my blog again… just too many things on my plate lately. I’m really trying not to fall into the “social media slump” that a lot of folks seem to be in lately, where lengthier informational blog posts go neglected due to the ease of posting a short 140-character tweet or an equally short message on Facebook. So over the next few days I’m going to post up a few items here that have been rolling around in my head for the last month or so.

First up… the second-annual Highball Halloween has come and gone! I served on the planning committee for the event again this year, and had a whole lot of fun with it. Attendance was up around 50% over last year, which meant that roughly 15,000 people flooded the streets to participate in the Halloween festivities.

While the event was largely a success, there are a few kinks left to work out. Bathroom lines were excruciatingly long at times, but issues like that can be easily resolved next year. I’m just glad that we don’t have anything close to the problems that occur in Athens for their big Halloween event. The Dispatch reported today that there were 112 arrests/citations at that. I don’t believe we had any at Highball.

Anyway… as much work as this can be (I was out until nearly 2am (3am if you don’t count the time change) cleaning up and loading/unloading tables and chairs and other heavy objects) I love to take part in making these types of events happen. It’s a lot of fun to attend, but it’s extremely personally satisfying to be able to say that you volunteered and helped make something happen. Of course, there are hundreds of others who did much more work than me on this, and they’re all to be commended and admired for their vision and execution of such an impressive event. If I can’t convince you to get involved next year, perhaps they can serve as an even bigger inspiration.

Already looking forward to next year. See you there!
