Eighteen Months Later…

WiiExactly 18 Months ago (November 19, 2006) Anne & I were out at midnight trying to score a brand spanking new Nintendo Wii. I didn’t think pre-ordering one was necessary, and there was no way I was going to stand in line for 24 hours like those other goofballs. I figured there would be enough to go around.

Needless to say, there weren’t any to be had that night. Or the next day. Or the next day. We called around to various stores over the next few weeks and still couldn’t find any of the elusive Wiis. After about a month of searching I gave up and bought an Xbox360 instead, since they were on sale at Microcenter and I was aching for some new video games to play.

Since then, we’ve been off and on with wanting a Wii. We’ll see one in a store and not want it, and then the next week we’d want one and couldn’t find any. Finally, last week, we decided we were going to make it happen and finally get one for us, and one for my younger brother-in-law who’s also been craving one without any way to go hunting for it himself.

So this morning, Anne & I went down to the Stringtown Road Target to pick up a few things and return a shitty router that I bought (I’ll save that topic for another day) and we headed down at 10am to see if they had any Wiis. No dice.

Anne stayed at Target while I ran across the street to Best Buy. There were 3 people in line outside at 10:20am and I didn’t realize that this particular Best Buy didn’t open til 11. Some employees confirmed that they had 12 Wiis that morning, so I figured I might as well wait 40 minutes to get one. The line fleshed out to about 15 people, and while not all of them wanted Wiis, they wouldn’t sell me two of them. Store policy I guess. Ugh.

So we headed home and about 30 minutes later a friend from the Polaris store called and said they got in 45 of them today and could set one aside if I came up immediately to get it, so I managed to score the second one up there for the younger bro-in-law. He sounded pretty excited when I called him to let him know about it.

I’m surprised that Wiis are still so hard to buy. I’m just glad that after all is said and done I ended up waiting outside on a nice sunny morning (got a little bit of a sunburn on my neck) and not in the cold trying to get one around Christmas two years ago.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I have some bowling to take care of.
