Columbus Young Professionals Commission – Meeting #1

Alrighty. After two months of waiting, the first YP Committee meeting was held on May 31st. I wanted to write something up about it sooner, but I haven’t had much time lately to get my thoughts jotted down.

It was held in a side room at Due Amici and the format was pretty standard for these types of things. Social meetup, agenda, more social afterwards.

As for the social aspect, I chatted with a few people I know, and met a handful of new people as well. I’m really not too much into the whole exchanging-of-business-cards thing or looking to further my career through these types of social connections. It seems like these sort of things are mandatory though, and since these are the people I’m going to be working with on this committee it is nice to get to know them first.

As for the meeting itself, it was pretty much what you’d expect from the initial introductory meeting of any kind. The leaders discussed how we had gotten together, what type of initiatives they’d like to see come out of this committee, and a lot of other encouraging motivational-talk about how we’re all going to be making history. Inspiring in an in-the-moment sort of way.

Then, everyone went around the room, stood up, and introduced themselves to the group. Some people (myself included) kept things short. Name, occupation/affiliation, and reason to be there. Others went on long tirades about specifics of how they wanted to make a difference. Which was nice, but at the same time not fully appropriate for what was supposed to be a quick personal introduction.

Anyway, the committee was broken up into several sub-committees designed to address a few specific goals. I’ll post more on these later. Our first sub-committee meeting will be coming up toward the end of the month, so I’ll be talking more about my specific area especially.
