Columbus Underground gets a nod from the Dispatch

Sorry for the lack of updates in the past week. I’ve been up to my eyeballs in work and then was out of town for the past three days on top of that.

I’ll have some more serious updates coming soon, but for now I just wanted to mention that ColumbusUnderground got some big props in the Dispatch today thanks to Ann Fisher’s commentary column. Thanks Ann!

Ann Fisher commentary: Is it time Columbus had a fresh name?

The Columbus Dispatch

Does a name make a city? Or does the city make the name?

In recent days, columbusunderground.com has played host to a debate about the name of our city. A very smart guy I know, who could live just about anywhere and chooses the center of Ohio, believes that it’s time to rethink the name.

Columbus is forgettable, and the city is easily confused with others of the same name. For many outside the Buckeye State, the name is always followed by a comma and Ohio. No one does that with, say, San Francisco or Atlanta.

Our city also should be known by its name only, independent of the state in which it is located. At least, that’s the thesis that started the thread at columbusunderground.com suggesting that the city needs a unique name.

Responses have been interesting, hilarious and heartening.

My favorite response in the columbusunderground.com discussion came from a person who subscribes to the notion that a city makes its name.

“I vote we keep our name the way it is, and if anyone says, ‘Columbus, Georgia?’ when you say where you’re from, simply hit them with a snappy ‘OHIO, (expletive form of dummy)’ and disgustedly roll your eyes to say, ‘as if.’ I do that all the time, and I feel like it’s the best way to build bridges and be an ambassador for our fair city.”

Love the attitude.
