I consider myself to be quite the hardcore nerd most of the time. I’m from a generation that’s grown up playing video games. I started on the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 and have played just about every major game to come along in the last two decades.
But I’ll admit that things have slowed down. I don’t have the time anymore to spend countless hours gaming, so when I do get the free time to play I have to pick a good game and make it count. And one of the best series of games I’ve played in the last few years has been the Advance Wars series for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS.
For those of you who haven’t played, I like to describe these games as a combination of Risk and Chess. A turn-based military strategy with so much diversity that no two sessions will be the same. I’ve plunked down full MSRP for these titles and gotten more than my $30 worth out of each of them.
Which is why I was so surprised to find out this past week that a new game in the series has just come out called Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. How did I not hear about this before? How did it slip by my news radar? When will I have time to play this game?
Seriously though, I’m very excited about this game. The built in Wi-Fi multiplayer is a first in the series, and I can’t wait to play against other players around the world. That is… as soon as I find the free time to actually play it. Which sadly may not be anytime soon. There’s no time for being a nerd anymore.
Don’t worry Walker. Once a nerd, always a nerd. Even with a new baby.
