A: I’m not really much of a sports fan in general

Q: What’s wrong with you? You live in Columbus and don’t like the Buckeyes?!?!?

I get that question a lot. Probably more often than with any other interest I have or don’t have. Why is that? Why is it mandatory that everyone in Columbus cheer on the Buckeyes? There are plenty of other things I don’t like (beer, lettuce, chocolate, cars) but I get much less ridicule about those.

While I appreciate what OSU’s college sports do for our local economy and our national recognition, I really don’t feel it necessary for everyone in this city to be expected to universally worship all things scarlet and gray. I never liked pep rallies in High School. I don’t like sweatclothing. And I honestly don’t think red and grayscale are a very stylish color combination.

I’m not trying to say that all OSU fans are bad people, because they’re not. But many act as if I’m some sort of alien because I don’t have any personal interest in local college sports. Why do I have to explain myself? Why can’t we just leave it as a difference of taste?

I honestly can’t think of any other interest that has been thrust harder upon me as an individual. I mean, those PETA people at Gallery Hop are pretty annoying with their videos and flyers showcasing how delicious meats are produced, but at least I only have to put up with them a handful of times per year in passing. OSU football is everywhere you look. 24/7/365.

Whew. Ok. Just wanted to get that off my chest a bit. I do hope OSU wins the game tomorrow. According to this article it would mean a $2 million bump in revenue for OSU, a lot of which would fund academic programs and scholarships at the university. So that would be a-ok with me. I just personally won’t be watching the game. And that should be a-ok with the fans.

From a slightly reverse perspective. I grew up as a huge Ohio State fan in NY. I spent many a days in high school defending my love for Ohio State football(…which was hard considering it was during Bellasari’s “reign”).

Being in Columbus during football season is very refreshing. But this comes from a girl who threatened her swim coach that she was going to quit swimming and go out for the football team…

I don’t care if you aren’t a fan:) And I’m sure as hell not gonna try to recruit you over. I hate baseball … and the more Yankee BS people try to shove down my throught, the more I hate it.

Just don’t go loving the Wolverines out of spite, k?

No worries. I’m probably not going to like any sports teams for awhile. At least not until Desi is old enough to play little league sports, and only then will I root for whatever sport(s) he chooses that he wants to play (if any at all). ;)
